Freiburg, Germany
About This Stop
Our enchanting two-day adventure in this captivating Black Forest university town offered the absolutely perfect blend of immersive cultural exploration, thrilling outdoor adventure, and authentic local experiences that showcased the very best of southwestern German charm and hospitality.
The magnificent Gothic Freiburg Cathedral (Freiburger Münster) with its intricate stone carvings, soaring spires, and breathtakingly beautiful stained glass windows served as the stunning centerpiece of the vibrant, bustling market square that buzzed with local life and energy throughout our visit. Here our adventurous family strategically split into two groups to maximize our cathedral experience—Aubrey courageously led Tyler, Andrew, and Madison up the narrow, winding medieval tower stairs for absolutely spectacular panoramic views across the red-tiled rooftops and dense Black Forest canopy, while Kennedy and Bryan chose to savor the peaceful, contemplative atmosphere inside the sacred space, listening to a talented local piano player filling the ancient stone walls with beautiful melodies and discovering the legendary cheesecake vendor enthusiastically recommended by our knowledgeable Airbnb host (and we can confirm it absolutely lived up to every bit of the incredible hype!).
Our exhilarating hillside adventure became one of the trip's most memorable highlights, involving a challenging climb up the steep, winding forest trail that overlooks the entire city, rewarding our determined efforts with absolutely breathtaking panoramic views that stretched across the picturesque valley and endless rolling hills of the Black Forest region. The unexpected discovery of a large, thrilling slide built directly into the mountainside sparked an impromptu family competition for fastest descent, with the kids (and perhaps some adults) getting perhaps a bit too adventurous and competitive in their enthusiastic pursuit of speed records! This challenging but incredibly rewarding hike provided spectacular bird's-eye views of the entire medieval city center, the historic university campus, and the surrounding dense Black Forest that gives this region its distinctive character and natural beauty.
We spent countless delightful hours wandering through the picturesque cobblestone streets of the Old Town, admiring centuries-old historic buildings with their distinctive architectural details, visiting the prestigious University of Freiburg campus with its mix of historic and modern academic buildings, and taking refreshing morning hikes through the charming residential districts that revealed authentic local life beyond the tourist areas. Our explorations covered extensive ground across this remarkably compact but incredibly feature-rich city center, where every corner seemed to offer new discoveries and photogenic moments.
Our culinary adventures proved equally memorable and delicious, featuring amazing market discoveries like incredibly fresh, locally-made sausages from friendly vendors (the special cheese-infused sausage with perfectly caramelized fried onions served on a crusty fresh baguette was an absolute standout that we still crave!). We also enjoyed cozy home-cooked meals in our comfortable apartment, preparing simple but satisfying dishes like perfectly seasoned chicken and melted cheese quesadillas with fresh grapes, warm tortillas filled with local cheese and fluffy scrambled eggs, plus multiple servings of that absolutely unforgettable, legendary cheesecake that our host had so enthusiastically recommended.
Our most amusing and memorable family moment occurred when Tyler accidentally forgot our apartment keys, leading to us getting completely locked out and having to wait patiently for our incredibly kind and understanding landlord to come rescue us—which actually turned into a wonderful opportunity to explore even more of the city's hidden corners and discover new neighborhoods we might have otherwise missed! During our relaxing downtime in the comfortable apartment, we enjoyed reading sessions with the captivating science fiction novel 'Ender's Game' and everyone became completely absorbed in playing the addictive mobile game DragonVale, while engaging in detailed comparisons between Freiburg's more intimate cathedral and Strasbourg's grander cathedral (concluding that while Freiburg's was smaller, it was definitely more ornately decorated and felt more personally accessible).
This remarkable Black Forest gem completely charmed our entire family with its perfect blend of well-preserved historic beauty, vibrant university town energy that kept the streets lively and interesting, and immediate proximity to stunning natural landscapes that made outdoor adventures incredibly accessible. The city provided a wonderful and refreshing contrast to our previous stops in France and Switzerland, showcasing distinctly German character while maintaining the warm, welcoming atmosphere that made our two days here an absolutely delightful and unforgettable part of our comprehensive European family journey that we'll treasure in our memories for years to come!
