About This Stop

Our Swiss adventure began with an exhilarating pre-dawn 6:22 AM departure through the eerily quiet and mist-covered streets of Strasbourg, wheeling our luggage through cobblestone lanes illuminated only by vintage street lamps as the city slept peacefully around us. This early start led to what felt like an almost-private luxury train ride through the absolutely stunning Black Forest region, where dense evergreen forests created a magical tunnel effect and we caught breathtaking glimpses of the thundering Rhine Falls—Switzerland's largest and most powerful waterfall—that absolutely thrilled the kids as we dramatically crossed the Swiss border (where our tickets were finally checked by friendly Swiss conductors who welcomed us to their country!).

Despite the minor setback of missing our scheduled connection in the charming German town of Offenburg due to unexpected delays, our quick thinking and resourceful alternative route navigation through smaller regional trains got us to Zurich right on schedule. Upon arrival at Zurich's impressively modern Hauptbahnhof, we efficiently utilized the convenient automated luggage storage lockers and strategically split into two groups to maximize our precious limited time in this expensive but fascinating Swiss metropolis.

Aubrey and the boys embarked on a special pilgrimage to the legendary On Cloud headquarters and flagship store—an absolute dream destination for dedicated running enthusiasts like ourselves—where they marveled at the innovative Swiss engineering behind these premium running shoes, tested various models, and gained insights into the brand's philosophy of combining performance with sustainable practices. Meanwhile, Bryan, Kennedy, and Madison thoroughly explored Zurich's remarkably well-preserved historic Old Town (Altstadt) with its narrow cobblestone streets, medieval guild houses with ornate facades, centuries-old churches with towering spires, and perfectly maintained architecture that showcases Switzerland's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.

The entire family joyfully reunited for a delicious and surprisingly affordable lunch at an authentic Thai restaurant tucked away in a quiet side street, where we savored flavorful pad thai, aromatic curries, and refreshing Thai iced tea while sharing stories of our morning adventures and planning our afternoon activities. This was followed by a practical but entertaining shopping expedition to a pristine local Coop supermarket for travel supplies and Swiss specialties, where we marveled at the incredible organization, premium quality, and eye-watering prices that characterize Swiss retail culture.

Our afternoon regrouping allowed us to discover Zurich's historic center together as a complete family unit, wandering along the picturesque Limmat River with its crystal-clear waters and elegant bridges, admiring the distinctive church towers that define the city's skyline, and soaking in the uniquely refined Swiss atmosphere that felt remarkably different from our previous days in the more relaxed, French-influenced Alsace region. We particularly enjoyed observing the impeccably dressed locals, the spotlessly clean streets, and the general sense of prosperity and order that permeates every corner of this remarkable city.

This carefully planned day trip provided us with a wonderful and authentic taste of Switzerland's distinct national identity and cultural values, contrasting beautifully and memorably with Strasbourg's charming French-German character while showcasing the dramatic differences in lifestyle, architecture, and social atmosphere that make European travel so endlessly fascinating. The day successfully packed numerous unforgettable and enriching moments into a single adventure—from the breathtaking natural beauty and serenity of our early morning train journey through the mystical Black Forest to the sophisticated urban exploration of Zurich's charming and meticulously maintained streets—making this Swiss excursion an absolutely essential and enriching addition to our comprehensive European family adventure that we'll remember and treasure for years to come!
