Nuremberg, Germany
About This Stop
Our European adventure brought us back to Germany with a visit to historic Nuremberg. This fascinating city offered an interesting contrast to our earlier German destinations, showing us both the scars of World War II and the remarkable reconstruction efforts that followed. From its imposing hilltop castle to its central location perfect for family exploration, Nuremberg provided a blend of historical significance and modern convenience.
Our Harry Potter-esque train journey featured an early morning subway ride to catch our fast train from Prague, quick adaptation when learning the last two cars would be detached mid-journey, settling into a family car that evoked Hogwarts Express vibes, and complete with a trolley service selling treats that enhanced the magical feeling.
Historic exploration included centrally located apartment in the heart of downtown, surrounded by massive old churches, learning about the city's WWII destruction and impressive reconstruction efforts, discovering that important artworks, including ceiling paintings, were preserved before Allied bombing, castle tour atop the hill overlooking the city (the boys went with Aubrey for a more detailed exploration), and walking tours of the rebuilt historic center.
Architectural impressions featured observing the interesting mix of preserved historical structures and post-war reconstruction, comparison to Strasbourg but 'without the old city charm' – a different kind of historical experience, appreciating the effort put into rebuilding the city in a way that honors its pre-war appearance, and massive old churches dominating the skyline.
Culinary discoveries included delicious local sausages from a vendor near the palace, amazing crepes from a convenient spot just across from our accommodation, and various treats discovered during our walks through town.
Family activities featured morning runs to start each day, split explorations with girls shopping at the 'deluxe mall' while boys toured the castle, relaxed pace with plenty of time for leisurely walks and family time, and comfortable city center location making it easy to explore in smaller groups. Nuremberg offered us a different perspective on German history, showing how a city can rebuild and reinvent itself after devastation while honoring its past. The convenient location of our apartment allowed for easy exploration of the city center, while the mix of historical sites and modern amenities kept everyone in the family engaged. From the impressive hilltop castle to delicious local foods, from shopping excursions to relaxed family walks, our time in Nuremberg provided a perfect balance of activities as our European adventure began to wind down!
