About This Stop
Our fascinating journey through Central Europe continued with a visit to the absolutely enchanting Czech capital of Prague, often called the 'City of a Hundred Spires' and widely regarded as one of Europe's most beautiful and romantic destinations. Despite a lengthy train journey to reach the city, our time in Prague rewarded us with medieval architecture, delicious culinary discoveries, and a perfect balance of historical exploration and family relaxation. This fairy-tale city of spires, bridges, and cobblestone streets quickly captivated our hearts.
Our journey and arrival featured a long but memorable train ride from Budapest (7.5 hours, though riding backwards wasn't ideal!), an interesting encounter with a fellow passenger who might one day Zoom into an IT infrastructure class, successfully navigating Prague's efficient subway system immediately upon arrival, and settling into our spacious and comfortable apartment with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Old Town Square exploration included wandering through charming pedestrian areas in Prague's historic center, witnessing the famous Astronomical Clock's hourly show with the procession of apostles at 11:00 AM, admiring the impressive cathedrals framing the vibrant square, and soaking in the medieval atmosphere of one of Europe's best-preserved historic centers.
Castle Hill and Charles Bridge adventures featured hiking up to Prague Castle (the largest ancient castle complex in the world), exploring the magnificent St. Vitus Cathedral with its soaring Gothic architecture, walking across the historic Charles Bridge built in 1357 by King Charles IV, admiring the bridge's imposing gatehouses and statues lining both sides, and taking in panoramic views of the city's red rooftops and spires.
Culinary discoveries included Tyler's enthusiasm for Prague Ham from a local vendor (so good we returned for seconds!), the girls finding a charming 'dwarf candy mine' with an array of sweet treats, Andrew's decadent stacked cake filled with chocolate, fresh strawberries, ice cream, and whipped cream (rated 9.5/10), chimney cakes filled with strawberries, ice cream, and chocolate for Kennedy and Madison, and a Father's Day celebration at Johnny's Pizza with jalapeño burgers and pizza that disappeared in record time.
Family activities featured morning runs with varying routes where the girls tackled steps while the boys completed their mileage, a visit to the National Museum for Kids with Kennedy and Madison, relaxed neighborhood strolls and family time, and a balanced mix of sightseeing and culinary adventures. Prague's magical atmosphere, with its blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, provided the perfect backdrop for our family exploration, with the city's compact historic center making it ideal for walking and discovering hidden gems around every corner!
