Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
About This Stop
Perched off the northwest coast of Africa, the lush island of Madeira gave us a day full of charm, curves, and culture. Arriving early in Funchal, we set off for one of the most unique adventures of the trip—riding downhill in wicker baskets! With mountain views, seaside walks, and sweet island treats, Madeira was a hidden gem that exceeded expectations.
Our early 8:00 AM arrival gave us a full day to explore this stunning Portuguese island. We drove up the winding mountain roads with tight curves and breathtaking cliffside views, making our way to experience the famous wicker toboggans that were once used by locals to travel quickly downhill. Guided by two skilled "carreiros" in traditional straw hats and rubber boots, we embarked on a fast, smooth, and surprisingly thrilling ride down the mountainside.
As we descended, we admired the colorful houses dotting the mountainside—each one picture-perfect against the lush green landscape. The experience was both exhilarating and culturally enriching, offering a unique glimpse into Madeira's transportation history while providing stunning panoramic views of the island.
What's a sunny island day without a sweet treat? After our mountain adventure, we discovered local gelato shops offering delicious island-inspired flavors that perfectly captured the tropical essence of Madeira. This refreshing break hit the spot after our mountain descent and gave us a chance to cool down while soaking in the island atmosphere.
We concluded our visit with a leisurely stroll down the main strip, taking in the sights of the charming city and the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The relaxed island pace was infectious as we enjoyed street performers, browsed local shops, and absorbed the laid-back Portuguese island culture. It was the perfect end to a short but magical stop that left us wanting more time to explore this hidden Atlantic gem.
