About This Stop

Our Southampton experience marked the bittersweet conclusion of our magnificent UK cruise aboard the Emerald Princess, as we arrived in this historic English port city on a beautiful morning that signaled both the end of our sea voyage and the beginning of our brief but memorable land-based exploration of southern England. Southampton, with its rich maritime heritage as the departure point for countless historic voyages including the Titanic, provided the perfect setting for our transition from cruise passengers back to independent travelers.

We deliberately took our time disembarking from the Emerald Princess, wanting to savor these final moments aboard the ship that had been our floating home for the past two weeks. Rather than rushing to leave, we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the ship's dining room, reflecting on all the incredible experiences we had shared throughout our UK and Iceland adventure while watching the bustling activity of Southampton's port through the restaurant windows. This unhurried approach allowed us to properly say goodbye to the crew members who had made our cruise so special and to take one last appreciative look at the ship that had carried us safely across thousands of miles of ocean.

Eventually, we made our way to the gangway with our luggage, joining the organized disembarkation process that efficiently moved hundreds of passengers from ship to shore. The Southampton port facilities were impressively well-organized, with clear signage and helpful staff who ensured that the transition from ship to land was as smooth as possible. Once we had completed the necessary customs procedures and collected all our belongings, we were ready to begin our brief but important Southampton adventure.

Our first order of business was getting to our hotel, and we hailed a taxi to take us to what we believed was our accommodation for the night. However, this seemingly simple task immediately became our first Southampton adventure when we discovered that we had been taken to the wrong Royal Hotel entirely. Southampton, it turned out, had multiple establishments with similar names, and our taxi driver had taken us to a different location than the one where we actually had reservations. Rather than being frustrated by this mix-up, we found it amusing and simply hailed another taxi to take us to the correct Royal Hotel, treating the detour as an unexpected mini-tour of Southampton's city center.

Upon finally arriving at the correct hotel, we were warmly welcomed by the front desk staff who efficiently handled our check-in process and were happy to store our luggage until our room became available later in the day. With our belongings safely secured, we were free to begin exploring Southampton without being encumbered by suitcases, which immediately made our experience much more enjoyable and flexible.

The girls were particularly excited to discover that there was a lovely park right next to our hotel, and they immediately requested permission to go for a run to stretch their legs after spending so much time aboard the ship. This turned out to be a perfect way for them to burn off some energy while we adults could relax and appreciate the pleasant English morning. Watching them run around the green spaces of this Southampton park, laughing and enjoying their freedom to move without the constraints of ship corridors and decks, reminded us of how important these simple pleasures can be when traveling with children.

Around noon, our hotel room finally became available, and we were pleased to check in and properly settle our belongings in our comfortable accommodation. Having a land-based room with windows that opened to fresh air and the sounds of the city felt wonderfully different after two weeks of cabin living, and we all appreciated the opportunity to spread out and organize our things in preparation for our journey home.

Once we were properly checked in and settled, we decided to venture out and explore Southampton's local shopping opportunities, particularly seeking out grocery stores where we could find some English treats and snacks to enjoy during our stay. This expedition turned into a delightful cultural experience as we wandered through local supermarkets and specialty shops, discovering British confections, biscuits, and other treats that we don't typically find at home. The girls were particularly excited to find some uniquely British sweets, while the adults enjoyed browsing the international selection of foods and beverages that reflected Southampton's status as a cosmopolitan port city.

As evening approached, we decided to explore Southampton's dining scene by taking a leisurely walk down the main street to see what local restaurants and eateries might catch our interest. This stroll through the city center gave us a wonderful opportunity to appreciate Southampton's blend of historic architecture and modern commercial development, while also getting a feel for the local atmosphere and community life.

Our evening exploration led us to a fantastic discovery in the form of a genuine doner kebab shop that clearly catered to locals rather than tourists. The authenticity of this establishment was immediately apparent from the moment we walked in, with its unpretentious atmosphere, the obvious pride the owners took in their food, and the steady stream of local customers who were clearly regulars. The doner kebabs turned out to be absolutely delicious, with perfectly seasoned meat, fresh vegetables, and traditional accompaniments that provided us with an authentic taste of the multicultural cuisine that has become such an important part of modern British food culture.

The following morning brought another beautiful day in Southampton, and the girls once again requested permission to go for a run in the park next to our hotel. This had clearly become their favorite Southampton activity, and we were happy to accommodate their desire for physical activity before beginning our journey to the next phase of our travels. Their enthusiasm for these morning runs reminded us of how travel experiences that might seem simple or mundane to adults can become cherished memories for children.

After the girls completed their final Southampton park run, we gathered our belongings and prepared to leave our hotel. However, before heading to our taxi for departure, we made one more delightful discovery when we spotted a charming gelato shop nearby. Madison, who had developed quite an appreciation for quality ice cream during our travels, was thrilled when we suggested stopping for a treat, and she carefully selected a mint chocolate chip gelato that turned out to be the perfect sweet conclusion to our Southampton experience.

As we savored Madison's gelato and reflected on our brief but memorable time in Southampton, we realized that this transition day had provided us with exactly what we needed - a gentle bridge between our intensive cruise experience and our return to normal life. Southampton had offered us the perfect combination of relaxation, local exploration, and simple pleasures that helped us process all the incredible experiences we had accumulated during our UK and Iceland adventure while preparing us mentally and emotionally for our journey home.
