About This Stop

After our completely unexpected and memorable detour in the historic city of Ulm, we finally made it to the magnificent Bavarian capital of Munich for several absolutely wonderful days of immersive German cultural exploration and discovery. From world-famous fairy-tale castles that inspired Disney movies to legendary historic beer halls steeped in centuries of tradition, our time in this incredibly vibrant and culturally rich German city offered the most perfect imaginable blend of deep cultural immersion, breathtaking architectural wonders, and absolutely delicious culinary delights—all while successfully navigating the complex public transportation system with our rapidly growing confidence and German language skills.

Our unexpectedly delightful Ulm exploration perfectly exemplified the travel motto of turning challenging lemons into sweet lemonade when morning trains remained completely canceled due to ongoing flooding, leading us to discover the absolutely magnificent Ulm Minster, an impressively massive and architecturally stunning ancient cathedral that completely took our breath away with its soaring Gothic spires and intricate stone carvings. We enjoyed surprisingly delicious breakfast bagels generously topped with creamy smear, crisp fresh lettuce, and perfectly ripe tomatoes that even managed to win over our typically picky eaters and provided the perfect fuel for our unexpected city exploration. Our morning adventures included meeting wonderfully friendly and helpful German locals who enthusiastically introduced us to the incredibly useful DB Trains app for accessing real-time schedule information and travel updates, plus delightful bonding conversations with charming elderly cycling enthusiasts during our eventual scenic train journey to the picturesque town of Memmingen.

Our absolutely magical Neuschwanstein Castle day trip became one of the undisputed highlights of our entire European adventure, featuring a breathtakingly scenic countryside journey along Germany's famous Autobahn through rolling Bavarian hills and traditional villages to reach the world-renowned fairy-tale castle that directly inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. The experience included a truly heart-stopping visit to the terrifyingly high but absolutely spectacular viewpoint bridge, where our brave boys Tyler and Andrew, along with fearless Madison, courageously braved the vertigo-inducing climb to the top viewpoint platform for incredible panoramic photographs and unforgettable memories. Our fascinating and informative guided castle tour revealed the surprising truth about the castle's relatively recent 19th-century construction, providing captivating insights into the eccentric King Ludwig II's obsessive swan fascination and the intriguing conspiracy theories surrounding his mysterious and untimely death. We were thoroughly entertained by our exceptional tour guides, including the legendary 18-year veteran Stevo from Ireland, whose humor and knowledge made history come alive, and the remarkable former Brazilian lawyer Daisy, whose unique international perspective added fascinating depth to our castle experience.

Our visit to the stunning Nymphenburg Palace provided a completely different but equally impressive royal experience, featuring a breathtaking Baroque residence filled with the most exquisite paintings, intricate architectural details, and opulent decorative elements that showcased the incredible wealth and refined taste of Bavarian royalty. We spent hours taking leisurely, contemplative strolls through the palace's absolutely beautiful and meticulously maintained formal gardens, with their geometric patterns, elegant fountains, and perfectly manicured landscapes that provided a peaceful retreat from the bustling city atmosphere. Our palace exploration included discovering the utterly fascinating museum of ornate royal sleds and elaborate ceremonial carriages housed on the property, showcasing the incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterized royal transportation throughout different historical periods, plus a peaceful and spiritually uplifting visit to the elegant palace church with its stunning Baroque interior.

Our comprehensive Old Town Munich exploration encompassed visiting numerous beautiful cathedrals and historic churches scattered throughout the charming medieval center, each offering unique architectural features and centuries of fascinating history that brought Munich's past to life before our eyes. We made the exciting discovery of King Ludwig II's final resting place, creating a meaningful connection between our castle visit and Munich's royal history, and witnessed the famous mechanical cuckoo clock show at precisely noon, surrounded by enthusiastic crowds of international tourists all capturing the magical moment. Throughout our city adventures, we successfully navigated Munich's efficient U-Bahn subway system with steadily increasing confidence and local knowledge, mastering the complex network of underground trains that connected every corner of this sprawling metropolitan area.

Our unforgettable culinary adventures reached their absolute pinnacle with an authentic and thoroughly enjoyable Bavarian experience at the world-famous legendary Hofbräuhaus Beer Garden, where we courageously sampled traditional local specialties including the enormous traditional pork knuckle that challenged even our heartiest appetites, fascinating Bavarian meatloaf that reminded us surprisingly of familiar spam but with much more sophisticated flavors, and an absolutely delicious Bavarian creme fruit bowl that provided the perfect sweet ending to our hearty meal. Our dining experiences also included discovering excellent local cafés and charming sandwich shops tucked away in quiet neighborhood corners, plus convenient and well-stocked grocery shopping at the nearby Edeka market that allowed us to maintain our budget while experiencing authentic German food culture.

Our daily family activities created the perfect balance between intensive tourism and practical everyday life, including energizing morning runs through Munich's tree-lined city streets that helped us explore different neighborhoods while maintaining our fitness routine, skillfully balancing our ambitious sightseeing schedule with essential practical needs like finding a sewing needle for emergency luggage repair that tested our German language skills. We took great pride in completely mastering Munich's comprehensive public transportation system, including buses, trams, and underground trains, while developing deep appreciation for our comfortable and well-located Airbnb accommodation that provided a welcome refuge after the previous day's stressful and exhausting travel challenges.

Our incredible time in Munich provided the most perfect imaginable blend of carefully structured tourism that ensured we experienced all the must-see attractions and completely relaxed spontaneous exploration that allowed us to discover hidden gems and authentic local culture. This remarkable city experience proved definitively that our family could indeed 'accomplish hard things' together while supporting each other through challenges and creating the kind of unforgettable, treasured family memories that will bind us together and inspire future adventures for the rest of our lives!
