About This Stop

Our visit to Santorini proved to be an adventure on this very cool island that offered multiple ways to experience its dramatic volcanic landscape and stunning cliff-top villages. The unique geography of this ancient caldera required creative transportation solutions, giving our family the opportunity to split up and pursue different adventures while still sharing the magic of one of Greece's most spectacular destinations.

From the coastal landing area, we discovered that reaching the top of the mountain required choosing between taking a bus or riding donkeys up the steep, winding paths that carved their way through the dramatic cliff faces. This transportation choice became the starting point for our family's different explorations of the island. Aubrey and the girls decided to make the journey to the top, eager to experience the famous cliff-top villages with their iconic white-washed buildings and blue-domed churches that have made Santorini one of the most photographed destinations in the Mediterranean.

Meanwhile, Grandpa and the boys chose a different perspective on the island's beauty by taking a boat tour that allowed them to appreciate Santorini's dramatic volcanic cliffs from the water. This maritime adventure provided stunning views of the caldera walls rising majestically from the azure Aegean Sea, while also offering insights into the geological forces that created this remarkable island through ancient volcanic eruptions. The boat tour gave them a unique appreciation for the scale and grandeur of this natural wonder that simply cannot be captured from land.

Bryan opted for yet another approach to experiencing Santorini, choosing to stay in the charming coastal town where he explored the little marketplace that bustled with local vendors, traditional crafts, and authentic Greek products. His exploration of this vibrant commercial area allowed him to interact with local merchants, discover unique souvenirs, and experience the more intimate, everyday side of Santorini life that exists beyond the famous tourist vistas.

The return journey to our ship provided its own memorable moments that showcased the advantages of cruise line status and Greek hospitality. When it was time for Grandpa and the boys to head back, Grandpa used his black diamond status to jump the line for the tender back to the ship. The boys got a real kick out of witnessing his command presence and the immediate respect it garnered from the crew, demonstrating how travel experience and status can create unexpected perks and smoother journeys.

When Aubrey and the girls were making their way back from their mountain adventure, they encountered an interesting display of cruise line priorities and Greek efficiency. Initially, the island authorities held up their tender to allow a local ferry to pass through the harbor. However, when they discovered that our group was traveling with MSC, they quickly reversed course and held up everyone else to give us priority boarding and departure. This small but telling experience reminded us how cruise lines maintain their schedules and relationships with port authorities, ensuring that their passengers receive the VIP treatment that makes these island adventures both seamless and memorable.
