Barcelona, Spain
About This Stop
Our arrival in Barcelona marked the beginning of the Mediterranean leg of the journey, and what a spectacular way to kick it off! With its bold architecture, vibrant energy, and iconic landmarks, the city delivered an unforgettable day of exploration that showcased both ancient creativity and modern Spanish culture. We hopped on the city's famous tour bus and soaked in everything from Gaudí's masterpieces to burgers ordered in Spanish.
We started the day aboard the Barcelona Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, beginning with a complete circuit to take in the full scope of this remarkable city. The route carried us past historic sites, offered glimpses of beach views, and revealed modern wonders that demonstrated Barcelona's unique blend of old and new. Tyler and Grandpa were so captivated by the experience that they decided to ride the entire loop again, finding new details and perspectives on their second journey through the city.
The architectural highlights proved absolutely breathtaking, particularly our encounter with the massive and iconic Sagrada Família Cathedral. Still under construction after more than a century, this Antoni Gaudí masterpiece stood as a jaw-dropping testament to visionary design and patient craftsmanship. As our bus continued through the city, we passed several other works by the famed architect, including the twisting, organic shapes of Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. These buildings appeared wild, creative, and unlike anything we had seen before, with their flowing lines and imaginative details challenging every conventional notion of architectural design.
Meanwhile, Andrew and Bryan embarked on their own adventure when they decided to get off the bus near the Nike Store for some souvenir shopping. Their exploration led them through local neighborhoods where they discovered the authentic rhythm of Barcelona street life. Their quest eventually brought them to a Burger King, where they successfully navigated the ordering process entirely in Spanish. This moment of cultural immersion proved both practical and entertaining, demonstrating how travel experiences can emerge from the most unexpected situations and create lasting memories beyond the traditional tourist attractions.
